The Wendlingen-Ulm high-speed line is part of the DB Stuttgart Ulm project. The construction firms Rhomberg Bahntechnik GmbH and Swietelsky AG will install a total of almost 120 km of slab track between Wendlingen and Ulm, of which over 60 km will be in tunnels. Added to this are 24 switches and the installation of 50-Hertz equipment as well as telecommunications and traction power systems. Furthermore, over 2,500 km of cabling will be laid, mechanical equipment including ventilation systems, technical rooms and signage will be installed as well as 78 km of illuminated handrail. The contract is worth around 250 million euros and up to 150 employees will be working on the site at any one time during construction. Once completed, the long-distance journey time from Ulm to Stuttgart will be halved from just under an hour to around half an hour. The high-speed trains will reach a speed of 250 km per hour.
